Coronet band injury - Notice the effect on the hoof wall over time. Handmade heartbar shoes were forged and the affected area floated to ease pressure and prevent the hoof wall cracking and weakening.

We were called to a new client who had an extremely lame horse (it could not weight-bear on the affected leg). Ben detected a seedy toe infection which had developed into an abscess. This photo shows the beginning of a hoof wall resection to drain the abscess and relieve pressure.

This thoroughbred has feet which tend to grow forward rather than down which had lead to distortion of the lamina and collapsing of the heels (first photo). With regular shoeing, each time bringing the base of support further backward and increasing heel support, Ben has been able to encourage the hooves to grow down rather than forward. This has improved the shape, strength and ease of breakover.

9 months after initial injury (see previous photo): minor hoof wall distortion. Regular shoeing involving pressure-relief of the weak point prevented cracking and maintained soundness of the hoof.

After relieving the pressure, a rockered heartbar shoe was fitted. This shoe distributes weight more evenly and eases break-over, thereby taking pressure off the front (weakened) hoof wall.
